9 OFWs victimized by human traffickers now in Manila – DMW
Nine overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who were victims of human trafficking in Myanmar have returned safely to the Philippines, the Department on Migrant Workers (DMW) said.
In a statement, the DMW said the repatriated OFWs arrived via Thai Airways at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City on Sunday night.
They were welcomed by DMW Assistant Secretary Maria Regina Angela Galias, along with personnel of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the NAIA Task Force Against Human Trafficking (NAIATFAT).
Upon their arrival, the OFWs received initial financial assistance and welfare support from the DMW and OWWA.
They will report to the DMW in January 2026 for legal aid and additional case management, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to protect and assist victims of human trafficking.
“This successful repatriation underscores the Philippine government’s strong commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Filipino workers abroad,” the DMW said.
Most victims of human trafficking are recruited through offers made on social media platforms, with promises of high salaries.
However, they are forced to work in scam hubs usually in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos under inhumane conditions. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
