OFW in Hong Kong rescued after being hurt by employer

An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Hong Kong was rescued after her employer was caught on camera physically hurting her.

According to Jonathan Andal’s report on “24 Oras Weekend” on Sunday, a viral video showed the employer aggressively pulling the victim’s hair.

Hong Kong police immediately responded to the incident and spoke with the OFW.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) did not disclose the victim’s identity. However, Hong Kong Labor Attaché Cesar Chavez said she is from Bulacan.

The OFW has since been discharged from the hospital and is currently staying at the temporary shelter of the Migrant Workers Office in Hong Kong.

OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan said they are verifying information that the person who hurt the OFW was allegedly her ward, who has a mental health condition.

Caunan added that the Hong Kong Police are investigating the case. A lawyer is also assisting the victim in filing a case against her employer, the report said.

“Of course, there is physical assault. But we’re also looking at physical abuse, which is also a ground for breach of contract under Hong Kong labor laws,” Caunan said.

OWWA will also ask the OFW whether she wants to return home or continue working in Hong Kong.—Vince Angelo Ferreras/MCG, GMA Integrated News
