Pinay nurse dead, 2 others injured in hit-and-run incident in Saudi Arabia
A Filipino nurse died while her two companions were severely injured after a hit-and-run incident in Tabuk City, Saudi Arabia.
In a Facebook post, the Migrant Workers’ Office in Jeddah said the victims, all Filipino nurses, just came from Tabuk Park Mall and on their way home when the incident happened at 1 a.m., Monday. Tabuk City is 900 kilometers away from Jeddah.
They were crossing the road in Muruj Al Amir District in front of the mall when the speeding vehicle hit them.
Unfortunately, one of the victims was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
Two of the victims later regained consciousness, one of them will be brought to Riyadh to undergo operation.
The families of the victims have been informed of the incident.
The MWO said it is now extending assistance to the victims.
“Nakatutok po ang MWO at OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration) sa kaso at maga-assist sa ikalulutas nito para mabigyan ng hustisya ang ating mga kababayan,” it said.
(The MWO and OWWA are monitoring the case and will assist in solving this to give justice to our victims.)
GMA News Online reached out to OWWA and the Department of Migrant Workers for additional details.
Justice for victim
In an interview with GMA News Online, the family of the deceased victim called for justice and expedited processes in bringing their relative home.
A family member said they are currently in coordination with government agencies but noted that the process they had to follow seemed long.
“Yung pinakamabilis na ipauwi nila, 'yung record nila na pinakamabilis is 2 to 3 weeks… Kami siyempre, masama na 'yung nangyari, 'yung lagay, medyo nadedelay pa 'yung burden sa 'min ngayon,” said the victim’s brother-in-law.
(The fastest repatriation record they have is 2 to 3 weeks… Us, of course, it’s already a bad situation and the delay in the repatriation adds to our burden.)
Expired OWWA membership
He shared that in addition to delay in repatriation, they are also encountering issues regarding the victim’s OWWA membership, which they were told had expired in September 2025.
“Almost 10 years [ng benefits] kung wala, makukuha lang daw niya 'yung burial [assistance], which is P20,000 at 'yung tulong na daw ng pagtransport,” he shared.
(Almost 10 years [of benefits] are gone, and all we’ll get is the burial [assistance], which is P20,000 and the help with the transport.)
They are now coordinating with OWWA regarding possible reactivation of the victim’s membership.
Despite this, he clarified that OWWA and other relevant offices in the Philippines were cooperative and have reached out for assistance.
The family is still considering filing charges against the suspect, a 34-year-old local of Saudi Arabia, and will be seeking legal advice.
“Sobrang tragic talaga po 'yung pangyayari na hindi natin inaasahan na doon. Gustong-gusto [ng asawa ko] na pumunta sana, kaya lang hindi pa clear kung ma-isponsoran siya ng visa ng employer ni [victim],” he said.
(What happened was really tragic since we didn’t expect it. [My wife] really wants to head there, but it isn’t clear if the [victim’s] employer would be able to sponsor a visa for her.)
“Ang plano po namin is continue coordination, tapos kung sino [sana] ang pwedeng makapag-lend sana ng help pa sa amin para mas mapabilis kasi 'yung situation… Mas masakit kung mas matagal siya makauwi. 'Yung main goal talaga po namin ay maiuwi na, at kahit paano mabigyan ng justice 'yung nangyari sa kapatid namin,” he added.
(We plan to continue coordination, and whoever can help us expedite the repatriation… It would hurt more if her repatriation would take longer. Our main goal would really be to bring her home and get justice to what happened to our sister.) —AOL, GMA Integrated News
