Filipino teacher arrested in Thailand for allegedly abandoning dead baby

A Filipino teacher in Thailand was arrested for allegedly disposing of her dead baby in a mall bathroom on March 20.

Without identifying the overseas Filipino worker (OFW), Philippine Embassy officials in Bangkok told GMA News that the teacher was apprehended by Thai police at a bus station hours after she left the mall.

Don Pancog, Philippine labor attaché to Thailand, said a concerned citizen discovered the dead baby and alerted authorities, who then reviewed CCTV footage that led to the arrest.

"She was forced to deliver her baby in one of the bathroom cubicles here at one of the malls here in Thailand. The medical reason for that, we still do not know. It may have something to do with the very, very hot weather here right now because she relayed to us that she was walking for a long time and she had to stop for certain brief periods; it may have something to do as well with, of course, she's already in her last trimester... What we're very very sure of is that she's very distressed," said Pancog.

Following the arrest, Philippine embassy officials conducted a virtual visit to the OFW, who is currently detained in a women's correctional facility.

The OFW did not give a reason for the incident, but she was said to be crying and remorseful when interviewed by Philippine officials.

"Hindi niya rin maintindihan. Hindi niya rin alam. Hindi niya rin masabi kung bakit niya nagawa 'yun. She was full of remorse. Her recollection of the event was very hazy. But this is not her first child kasi," Pancog said.

(Even she couldn't understand it. She doesn't know. She couldn't say why she did that. She was full of remorse. Her recollection of the event was very hazy. But this is not her first child.)

"In a state of panic when the baby's head went out, she just did what I think any other mother would do. So, deliver the baby herself," said Pancog.

According to Charmaine Guevara, Chargé d'Affaires of the Philippine Embassy in Thailand, the Filipina is mentally stressed.

"And more so now na mayroon din siyang psychosocial na mga pangangailangan din po," Guevara said.

(And more so now as she also has psychosocial needs.)

An investigation by the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok revealed that the teacher did not know she was pregnant when she landed in Thailand for work in October 2025. She only found out a month later. She was seven months pregnant when the incident happened.

Pancog said the teacher, who hails from Mindanao, has a common-law husband and one child.

She is being investigated by the Thai police for murder or infanticide, tampering with evidence, and disposal of a corpse.

"Noong siya po ay na-apprehend noong two Fridays ago, she was immediately brought to a medical facility dahil pina-check po siya dahil nanganak po siya eh. At saka rin siya inapplyan for—, inapplyan 'yung ma-extend 'yung detention sa kanya for further investigation. Bukod naman po sa investigation towards her, mayroon din 'yung sa forensic doon sa bata po. And this will definitely take time kasi marami ang kailangan ma-establish towards sa kanya. Siya ba ang nanay? May kaugnayan ba sila? Ano ang nangyari du'n sa bata? Or ano nag-cause?" said Pancog.

(When she was apprehended two Fridays ago,  she was immediately brought to a medical facility so she can be checked since she gave birth. An application was also made to extend her detention so that further investigation could be conducted. The child will also undergo forensic examination. And this will definitely take time because we need to establish many details. Is the OFW the mother? What happened to the baby? Or, what was the cause?)

The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok said a lawyer has already been assigned to the OFW and will provide medical and psychosocial interventions when needed, if approved by Thai authorities.

Embassy representatives have secured permission to conduct their first face-to-face visit to the detained OFW on Wednesday, April 1.

Meanwhile, Philippine officials appealed to netizens to be cautious when commenting on the OFW's situation, as no one knows her side of the story yet.

(We at the Philippine embassy and the Migrant Workers' Office appeal to our countrymen to withhold casting judgment or making short comments about our distressed fellow Filipino. Let us remember that she is also a mother who also has a family. Until we don't know what truly happened, let us include her in our prayers, especially this coming Easter Sunday.)

The OFW's sister has already been informed about the incident, Philippine officials said. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
