DMW to Middle East OFWs: Think before you click, don’t share fake news

Amid the conflict in the Middle East, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reminded overseas Filipino workers in the Gulf region to be vigilant and verify any information that they share on social media.

This is because sharing fake news may lead to serious consequences in some nations in the Middle East, the DMW said in an advisory.

The agency acknowledged the concern of OFWs over developments in the Middle East conflict, but said OFWs should be more critical of information online and to trust only official, verified sources.

“Mahalagang mag-ingat at mag-verify muna bago mag-click o mag-share sa social media… Lagi nating tandaan na ang paglabag sa batas ng host country, kabilang ang pagpapakalat ng maling impormasyon, ay may kaakibat na parusa kahit walang masamang intension,” the DMW said.

(It is important to be careful and verify before clicking or sharing on social media… Let us remember that violating the laws of your host country, including spreading false information, may come with penalties even if you have no ill intentions.)

It added that in the United Arab Emirates and other countries in the Middle East, OFWs may be held liable under their respective cybercrime laws and that sharing unverified or false information may be a criminal offense.

The DMW shared the following do’s and don’ts so that OFWs are better equipped against fake news.

Do’s:

  • Verify information before sharing it online. Make sure that it came from official and trustworthy sources.
  • Abide by the advisories and announcements of the host government and the Philippine Embassy.
  • Report any suspicious information that is being circulated. Be calm and critical amid latest developments and updates.

Don’ts:

  • Do not share or forward unverified news, photos, or videos even if you do not intend to cause panic or do any harm.
  • Do not post or make comments about sensitive incidents or issues if there are no confirmed details.
  • Do not take photos or videos of incidents or upload these without any permission.
  • Do not join others in spreading speculation or wrong information that might cause fear or chaos, especially with the tension in the Middle East.

The DMW added that violating the laws of the host country, especially on social media usage, may lead to severe penalties such as fines, imprisonment, or deportation.

OFWs may follow the DMW’s website at dmw.gov.ph, social media accounts on Facebook, X, Youtube, and TikTok or email the DMW at feedback@dmw.gov.ph for verified, updated information. — JMA, GMA News
