DMW to OFWs: Don’t use visitor visas to work in other countries
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Thursday reminded overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and other Filipino nationals traveling to Australia to strictly follow visa conditions and ensure they use the correct visa category for their intended purpose.
In a public advisory, the DMW said it observed that some travelers may be applying for Australian visitor visas “for purposes beyond what they’re meant for.”
“Using a visitor visa for employment, extended caregiving, or other work-related activities may violate visa conditions and could lead to serious immigration consequences, including visa cancellation, deportation, and possible restrictions on future travel,” the DMW said.
The agency explained that the Australian visitor visa (Subclass 600) is mainly issued for short-term tourism, business visits, or family visits.
The DMW said it is strengthening public advisories with the Office of Migration Affairs of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney.
This is to ensure that “Filipino nationals are fully informed about appropriate visa pathways and the specific conditions tied to each visa category.”
It advised Filipinos planning to work in other countries to “obtain the proper work visa and meet all host country immigration requirements before leaving.”
“The DMW continues to enhance its public information and pre-departure orientation programs to promote safe, orderly, and regular migration,” it added. — JMA, GMA News
