DMW: 15k repatriation requests from OFWs amid Middle East conflict

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has received around 15,000 requests for repatriation assistance from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In a statement, the DMW said most of the requests are from OFWs who are already classified as repatriation-ready, which means they have completed the necessary requirements and are just waiting for arrangements for their return to the Philippines.

It said such cases “remain a priority, particularly for those in distress or vulnerable conditions.”

The DMW also clarified that “not all requests indicate an immediate need for repatriation.”

“Some OFWs submitted requests simply to be included in official monitoring lists, allowing them to access assistance if their situation abroad worsens as regional instability continues,” the agency said, adding that this proactive step “helps ensure faster response times should emergencies arise.”

The DMW noted that some OFWs withdrew their request for repatriation after they experienced improvements in their circumstances such as securing stable work or resolving workplace issues amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.

As of April 6, 4,611 OFWs and their dependents have been repatriated from the Middle East amid the ongoing conflict in the region.

The DMW said it will continue to provide comprehensive assistance, including onsite support, repatriation, and reintegration to affected OFWs.

They are also given temporary shelter, food, basic necessities, medical and psychosocial services, financial aid, transportation support, livelihood and financial assistance, skills training, and job placement services.

The DMW is working with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in exploring alternative labor markets and profiling repatriated OFWs to match them with suitable employment opportunities.

It also continues to facilitate land transfers to exit points for repatriation in coordination with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and in accordance with host country safety protocols. — JMA, GMA News
