Number of Filipinos studying in U.S. rises 50% in a decade

The number of Filipino students studying in the United States has increased by 50% over the past decade, even as global economic uncertainties continue to affect education decisions worldwide, a US Embassy official said Friday.

From around 3,000 students ten years ago, the figure has risen to about 4,500 in 2025, according to US Embassy Counselor for Public Affairs Jessica Simon.

“We very much welcome Filipino and international students in the United States,” Simon said in an ambush interview, adding that student visa appointments remain open.

Simon said global economic challenges and uncertainties have not significantly dampened interest among Filipino students.

She also noted that while uncertainties may affect decision-making timelines, many students continue to explore opportunities abroad.

“Even if it’s not to depart next month or next year, students can benefit from taking this first step,” she added.

Growing interest

Filipino students continue to pursue a wide range of programs, with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses remaining a key area of interest.

“With the increasing awareness of artificial intelligence and related jobs, that’s definitely an area of interest,” Simon said.

She added that opportunities also extend to the arts and humanities.

The US Embassy is actively promoting higher education opportunities through initiatives such as the EducationUSA University Fair, which is now on its 11th year.

The event brings together American universities and institutions seeking to expand their international student population.

“Universities and colleges are here because they would like more Filipino students,” Simon said.

She emphasized that there are currently no restrictions for Filipino students applying for US study visas.

Cost and access

Despite the rising numbers, affordability remains a concern for many Filipino families.

“That is an important question because it can be very expensive,” Simon said.

She pointed to scholarship opportunities under the Fulbright Commission, as well as financial aid offered directly by universities.

The EducationUSA University Fair is part of broader efforts to strengthen US -Philippines ties through academic exchange.

“It’s not just a matter of rankings or laboratories or classes,” Simon said in her speech. “At its heart, it’s about bringing people together to solve life’s greatest challenges.”

A second leg of the fair will be held in Davao City on Saturday, marking its expansion to Mindanao.

The event features a wide range of American institutions, including:

  • Arizona State University
  • College of Central Florida
  • Lewis University
  • Manhattan University
  • Middle Tennessee State University
  • Saint Louis University
  • South Dakota State University
  • Southern Utah University
  • Stony Brook University
  • University of Akron
  • Trine University
  • University of Rochester
  • University of San Francisco.

Participating organizations also include the British Council (IELTS), College Board (SAT), and Pearson. —VAL, GMA News
