Young Filipino-Italians energize PH Independence Day 2026 celebration in Rome
ROME, Italy — The celebration of the 128th anniversary of Philippine Independence held in Rome over the weekend not only commemorated the nation's freedom, but also served as a vibrant showcase of the talents, achievements, and cultural pride of young Filipinos born and raised in Italy.
The event on June 14, Sunday, was organized by the Philippine Independence Day Association (PIDA), a coalition of sports, civic, cultural, and social organizations.
Approximately 7,000 Filipinos from Rome and neighboring provinces gathered to celebrate one of the largest Filipino community events in Italy.
Pinoy pride in sports
One of the highlights of the celebration was the recognition of Italian-Filipino athletes who brought pride and honor to the Philippines during the 2025 Southeast Asian Games.
Among those honored were Arriane Angela Paz (Bronze, Windsurfing), Jasmine Althea Ramilo (Gold and Bronze, Rhythmic Gymnastics), Agostino Teofilo Alfieri (Bronze, Hockey 5s Team Captain), Clayton John Lanting (Bronze, Hockey 5s), Kyle Lanting (Philippine National Hockey Athlete), and Dalph Panopio (Gold, Men's Basketball – Gilas Pilipinas).

Brothers Kyle and Clayton, both born in Rome and active players for Lazio Hockey, shared their pride in representing the Philippines through sports.
"I am very proud to be Filipino," said Kyle, while Clayton encouraged fellow young people to "Try everything."
For Alfieri, celebrating Philippine Independence Day with the Filipino community for the first time was a memorable experience.
He credited the Filipino spirit of family as his inspiration—both in sports and in life.
"Keep fighting for your dreams. Don't stop training and never give up," he advised.
Paz, meanwhile, expressed her pride in celebrating her Filipino heritage and shared that she is already preparing for the next Asian Games in 2026.
Her advice to big dreamers? Paz said, "Don't be discouraged. Just try, because not trying is already a 100% failure."
Ramilo, who is preparing for the World Cup in Milan this July, said she is proud to embody the qualities Filipinos are known for—hard work, positivity, and humility.
"Always believe in yourself and never give up," she said.
Salute to academic excellence
PIDA, together with the Knights of Rizal (KOR), also honored more than twenty young Filipinos who recently completed university degrees and doctoral studies.
The recognition celebrated not only their academic achievements but also their role as inspirations to fellow Filipino youth. For many parents, the moment represented the fulfillment of years of sacrifice and hard work.

Many shared that they worked multiple jobs to support their children's education and provide them with better opportunities.
"Seeing our children receive recognition in front of thousands of Filipinos is a source of immense pride," one parent said.
The awarding ceremony became one of the most emotional moments of the celebration, highlighting the determination of Filipino families and their strong belief in education as a pathway to a better future.
Joining the celebration were Philippine Ambassador to Italy Neal Imperial and officials of the Philippine Embassy in Rome. Also present was the newly appointed Philippine Ambassador to the Holy See, H.E. Raphael Perpetuo Lotilla.
Filipino youth
The cultural show was another major highlight of the Independence Day celebration.
Through dance, music, and instrumental performances, young Filipino-Italians proudly showcased their talents, their Filipino identity, and their appreciation for the rich culture and history of the Philippines. Their performances became a source of joy and inspiration, proving that the Filipino spirit remains vibrant even far from home.

Among the featured performances were the traditional Singkil presented by Pinoy Teens Salinlahi, the modern interpretation of Tinikling performed by students of the International Pinoy School in Italy (IPSI), as well as festive dances such as Calacatsara by the Calaca Community and Ati-Atihan by the International Migrants School.
Golden voices
Young Filipino singers also captivated the audience. Among them was Gabriel Angelo Montalva, who proudly represented the Filipino community in "The Voice Kids Italy" in January 2026.
Young violinists Stefano Mori and John Gabriel Chavez performed the beloved patriotic song "Bayan Ko," drawing heartfelt applause from the crowd.
"It feels like being in the Philippines," shared a group of young attendees.
"We are surrounded by Filipinos, Filipino food, Filipino products, and most importantly, young Filipinos are at the center of the celebration. If you ask us, we would attend this event every year because of the unique joy it brings."
Creativity, sustainability on the runway
Young participants of the "Kids Teens Models in Rome" also showcased their creativity in a fashion show featuring costumes made entirely from recycled materials designed by their mothers.
Trash bags, egg trays, old fabrics, plastic cutlery, bubble wrap, cellophane gift wrappers, newspapers, tissue paper, plastic spoons, colorful plastic bags, old notebooks, wires, cardboard, and carton boxes were transformed into stunning creations celebrating Filipino culture and ingenuity.

One of the standout designs was the Philippine Eagle Warrior Costume, inspired by the country's national bird and symbolizing the courage and strength of the Filipino people.
Another featured an elegant Philippine Eagle-inspired dress crafted from recycled paper bags and topped with an intricate headdress.
"We chose recycled materials because they perfectly reflect the lives of OFWs and the hearts of mothers," one participant said, adding that, "Our beauty and talent cannot be bought—they are created. We wanted to show that Filipinos have golden hands capable of transforming ordinary materials into extraordinary masterpieces, wherever we may be in the world."
The future of the PH community
The celebration underscored the vital role of second-generation Filipinos in Italy in preserving and promoting Filipino culture.
Through their active participation, they demonstrated that they will continue to serve as a bridge connecting future generations to the traditions, values, and heritage of their parents' homeland.
The event served as a reminder that independence is not only about remembering history but also about recognizing the young people who continue to shape the future of the Filipino community around the world.
With their energy, talent, and pride, young Filipino-Italians truly shone as role models of unity, identity, and love for country.
Adding to the excitement of the celebration was a grand raffle draw. Nine round-trip airline tickets from Rome to Manila were awarded, along with several European tour packages generously donated by sponsors.
The celebration also showcased the strength and diversity of the Filipino community in Italy, with 49 groups participating in the cultural program through music, dance, and other artistic performances.
Meanwhile, nearly 100 business and community booths lined the venue, highlighting Filipino entrepreneurship, products, services, and organizations.
Italian appreciation
The event also received praise from local Italian officials.
"Thank you to the Filipino community for being an outstanding example of integration in Rome. Thank you for your dedicated service and love for Italy. Your celebration is a symbol of your strong connection to your homeland, even after many years away," said Sabrina Giusepetti, president of Rome's 13th Municipality.
PIDA president Auggie Cruz likewise expressed his gratitude to the thousands of attendees, volunteers, performers, sponsors, and partner organizations whose collective efforts made the celebration a resounding success.
"I would like to acknowledge your presence and outstanding contributions to the success of the Kalayaan 2026 celebration in Rome,"
