8 Filipino teachers unharmed after Thailand school shooting - embassy

Eight Filipino teachers were unharmed after a student opened fire at the school where they work north of Bangkok on Friday, the Philippine Embassy in Thailand said.

Reuters reported that a teenage Thai student killed at least five people and himself at Debsirin Nonthaburi School after fatally shooting his grandparents. The report added that all those killed at the school were teachers and staff.

"The Philippine Embassy confirms that no Filipino teachers or citizens were harmed or injured. All eight registered Filipino teachers in Debsirin School Nonthaburi are safe, accounted for, and uninjured. The Embassy remains on standby to provide any necessary assistance through its official channels and continues to monitor the situation closely," the embassy said in a statement.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the young gunman had suffered from stress related to his studies and lived with his grandparents. Police discovered their bodies when they visited the home after the school shooting.

"The Philippine Embassy extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, as well as to the entire school community and the Thai government following the tragic school shooting incident at Debsirin School Nonthaburi," the embassy said.
