2 Filipino seafarers injured in suspected hate crime in UK back in PH

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced that two Filipino seafarers who were injured in a suspected hate crime in Bristol, United Kingdom arrived in Manila on Sunday, August 9, 2026.

There were three Filipino crew members from M/V Arklow Beacon that were involved in the incident, the third is still in critical condition.

DMW's OIC-Assistant Secretary for Sea-based OFW Concerns Augusto San Diego III and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) representatives met the two seafarers at the airport with representatives of the deploying manning agency, Sealanes Marine Services, Inc.

The DMW said they received airport assistance after earlier receiving financial assistance and support from the DMW and OWWA through the Migrant Workers Office in London.

“Kami ay nagagalak na kayo ay nakauwi ng matiwasay, kasunod ng inyong hindi magandang karanasan. Andito ang DMW at OWWA, handang magbigay ng anumang tulong na inyong kakailanganin habang kayo ay nagpapagaling,” OIC-Assistant Secretary San Diego said.

“Grabe po yung suporta ng mga taga DMW at OWWA sa amin habang kami ay nasa London at nagpapagaling. Maraming salamat po sa tulong at suporta na inyong ibinigay,” said one of the seafarers.

"The DMW and OWWA directed the agency to arrange the necessary physical and psychological checks and debriefing sessions for returning seafarers and to continue providing support to the seafarer who remains in critical condition and to his family," the DMW also said. — BAP, GMA News
