2 Filipino women confirmed dead, 4 others injured in Singapore car accident

Two Filipino women have been confirmed dead in a car accident at a shopping mall in Singapore, a top official of the Philippine Embassy to Singapore told Super Radyo dzBB on Sunday.

According to Singapore's Straits Times, the car rammed into a metal railing and landed on the side road next to Lucky Plaza, a popular hub for Filipino domestic workers during their rest day.

Charge d' Affairs Adrian Candolada told dzBB that all six of the victims in the incident were Filipino women.

"Parang freak accident ang nangyari kaninang hapon, between four and five, dito sa likod ng Lucky Plaza, na isang private sedan ay nawala sa road tsaka binangga ang grupo ng kababayan natin na nagpapahinga sa gilid ng daan at dinala pa pababa doon sa isang driveway ng Lucky Plaza," Candolada said.

He added that the victims were brought to state-run Tan Tock Seng Hospital. According to the latest police report, two of the survivors are in the ICU while the other two are in stable condition.

"All of them are adults. We are still verifying their next of kin in Manila. At least two of the victims ay galing sa Cagayan Province, ang isa naman La Union," Candolada said.

The Straits Times also reported that the driver, a 64-year-old man, has been arrested.

The Department of Foreign Affairs earlier confirmed the incident. Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Ed Meñez told reporters that the Home Office in Manila is checking the latest information on the accident with the Philippine embassy, adding that all assistance will be provided to the victims. — BM, GMA News
