Pinoy seaman turns operation specialist on US Navy warship

From an undesignated seaman, a Filipino from Cagayan De Oro City is now serving as an operation specialist aboard the US Navy's guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook.

According to a report by Lieutenant Jill Brown of the Navy Office of Community Outreach, Petty Officer 2nd Class Eric Jumilla joined the Navy four years ago.

“I wanted to do something to make a difference in my life... I went to college but got bored, and I wanted a sense of belonging,” Jumilla said.

Jumilla said the values from his hometown were similar to that needed to serve and succeed in the military.

“A sense of family, helping others, and respecting my elders are part of my Filipino culture,” Jumilla said.

After five years as a forward-deployed destroyer, the Donald Cook returned home from Naval Station Rota, Spain.

“These sailors distinguished themselves throughout their five years deployed overseas... Their contribution to NATO security and freedom of navigation is a legacy that will now continue with Arleigh Burke," said Captain Joseph Gagliano, Commander of the Destroyers Squadron 60 and Task Force 65.

Jumilla continues his service in the Navy as the United States focuses on rebuilding its military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.

The Cagayan de Oro native said it takes all of the allies to maintain relationships with other countries, through helping with aid and sharing.

“I was an undesignated seaman but ended up becoming an operation's specialist,” said Jumilla. “I struggled to catch up to the other sailors, but now I'm caught up.”

Jumilla takes pride in serving the country through the United States Navy.

“God-given purpose and patriotism makes you feel like you are doing something more... Serving my country makes me proud, and gives a peace of mind that you're doing something for others to have a peaceful life,” Jumilla said. —LBG, GMA News
