Filipino street food recognized in Canada competition
Filipino street food earned recognition at the 2026 YMCA Embassy Chef Showcase held in Ottawa, Canada, on April 16.
The Philippine Embassy in Canada said the country’s entry, which bagged the Judges' Award, stood out among 15 participating nations for its Kanto-themed Filipino street food presentation led by executive chef David Vinoya, with chef Jan Michael Co. The team served Filipino favorites such as beef tapa barbecue, chicken inasal barbecue, longanisa barbecue, pork barbecue, and achara under “D’ Original Mang David’s BBQ.”
Judges recognized the Philippine entry for its execution, presentation, flavor, and creativity. The Philippine booth also became one of the main attractions during the event, drawing long lines of guests eager to try authentic Filipino street food, according to the embassy.

Ambassador to Canada Jose Victor Chan-Gonzaga said they wanted Ottawa to experience how Filipinos end their workday, “whether while waiting for a bus or jeepney in Cubao or heading home to their barangays, by enjoying comfort food from grill stations similar to “D’ Original Mang David’s BBQ.”
The country's participation reflects ongoing efforts to promote Philippine culture and cuisine on the international stage while supporting cultural exchange and community engagement. —VBL, GMA News
