"Secrets of the River" and "From the Critter's Eye"

Episode on September 3, 2008 Wednesday night after Saksi Bugan River in Panay has boasted of being one of the cleanest in the country and has even surpassed standards for potable water. It is home to rare river corals and fish species. Romi Garduce takes us rafting through six kilometers of this river system and uncovers stories that lay upon its banks and surrounding forests. Compared to other dead rivers in the country, Bugan flourishes with life and activity. But little do Romi and the team know that the adventure would take a turn when their journey is disturbed by the distinct sound of a chainsaw in the forest. What started out as a river adventure becomes a chase after loggers who continually grow in number in the area. In the forest surrounding Bugan, they discover timber cut into wood planks ready to be sold. This area is the habitat of Panay Island's endemic and endangered animals, feared to be lost to extinction within a matter of years. The destruction of their habitat for profit has long been a struggle between forest rangers and those looking for a quick buck. When people think of animals, we usually imagine large mammals, scaly reptiles and amphibians, or cute and furry little creatures. But eighty percent of the animal kingdom is actually made up of bugs and insects! Guest Mark Salazar shows us the world from the critter's eye. With an insect expert, the team captures flies in the middle of mating rituals, a spider making its web and devouring its prey, a giant cricket eating its lunch, and a baby dragonfly still learning how to... you guessed it, fly! Sa loob ng maraming taon, ang Bugan River sa Panay ang itinuring na isa sa pinakamalinis na ilog sa bansa. Sa linis nito, nalampasan pa niya ang pamantayan para sa tubig inumin! Ang ilog na ito ay naglalaman ng di-pangkaraniwang uri ng corals at maliliit na mga isda. Samahan si Romi Garduce sa pagbaybay ng anim na kilometrong bahagi ng ilog upang alamin ang mga kwento sa paligid nito. Di tulad ng ibang patay na ilog, ang Bugan ay punung-puno ng buhay. Pero sa gitna ng paglalakbay sa ilog, hindi inaasahan ni Romi at ng grupo na mag-iiba ang kanilang destinasyon nang makarinig sila ng tunog ng chainsaw sa kagubatan. Ang nagsimula bilang isang river adventure ay magtatapos sa paghahabol sa mga chainsaw logger. Sa gitna ng kagubatan, matatagpuan nila ang mga trosong pinutol na at handang ibenta. Ang lugar na ito ay nagsisilbing tirahan ng mga natatangi at nanganganib na hayop ng Panay Island. Ang mga hayop na ito ang nasa gitna ng laban sa pagitan ng mga forest ranger at ng mga taong naghahanap ng mabilis na kita. Kapag nababanggit ang mga hayop, kadalasa'y naiisip natin ang malalaking mga mammals, reptilya, o di kaya'y mga mabalahibong hayop. Pero mahigit walumpung porsyento ng mga hayop sa animal kingdom ay maliliit na insekto! Samahan ang guest nating si Mark Salazar sa kaniyang paglalakbay sa mundo ng maliliit ngunit nakabibilib na mga nilalang. Kasama ang isang eksperto, nahanap at nakunan ng grupo ang mga insektong nagpaparami ng lahi, gagambang gumagawa ng sapot at kumakain ng kaniyang nahuli, at isang batang tutubing nag-aaral pa lang lumipad!
