Airing date: Wednesday, June 27, 2012
After five days on open sea, the group of fishermen being tailed by Doc Nielsen and the team is back at the General Santos port. Their catch: one piece of juvenile tuna. Tuna fishing in Davao Gulf and Sarangani Bay used to be easy. But now, fishermen risk their own safety to cross Indonesian waters where tuna is said to be more abundant. Doc Nielsen observes the economics of tuna at the GenSan port where each tuna caught has a story behind it.

In 2008, the Philippines ranked 4th among top tuna producers in the world according to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization. But experts fear that the tuna population is on a verge of a collapse. Tuna species are “vulnerable” to extinction according to the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) and one species, the blue fin tuna, is now on the endangered list. Can we still save the tuna? Doc Nielsen finds out how.
Guest adventurer Mariz Umali has completed her assignment in Apo Island. According to turtle expert Renato Borja, this is the first time that he has confirmed that Apo Island is a nesting site for sea turtles.
But there are more stories to tell. In the island, Mariz meets a resident, Steve De Nees, a Danish national who is into wildlife filmmaking who shares that one of his favorite subjects are the sea turtles. Steve shows Mariz what he has filmed with the sea turtles over the years.
