Philippine Tamaraws and Pacific sharks take center stage on 'Born to be Wild'

“Philippine Tamaraw” and “Sharks of the Pacific”
All-new series starts Wednesday, July 24
The Philippine Tamaraw is the largest land mammal endemic to the Philippines. Their population declined to an alarming one hundred in 1939 because of poaching and habitat destruction, putting the wild tamaraws in serious danger of extinction. In 1996 the tamaraw was listed as one of the world’s most endangered animals according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature or IUCN. But today, there is hope.
As of April 2013 the latest count by the Tamaraw Conservation Program lists 355 tamaraws in Occidental Mindoro. This inspired the team of Doc Nielsen Donato to film the wild tamaraw and bring home footage to prove that this iconic Philippine animal still thrives. Using specialized equipment and camera lenses, Doc and a team of conservationists spend days and nights in Mt. Iglit-Baco, home of the wild Tamaraws.
The shark is one of the most feared animals because of its reputation of attacking people. This year ten shark attacks have been recorded around the world and recently a Filipino was reported to have been attacked by sharks in the Indian Ocean. Doc Ferds Recio comes face to face with sharks in Palau where he learns more about their behavior. Here, he encounters not just one but several groups of this magnificent creature. In Palau, sharks are treasured not for their fins, but for their impact on Palau’s economy through tourism.
