BORN EXPEDITIONS: Thailand and The Maldives
January 18, 2015

This Sunday, Doc Ferds Recio and Doc Nielsen Donato encounter the big fish of Thailand and the Maldives.

In Thailand’s man-made lakes, Doc Nielsen Donato is searching for a species of fish notorious for its strength.  In its native South America, this fish is said to be strong enough to topple fishermen.  The monstrous fish that can grow up to fifteen feet in length is called the arapaima.  Doc Nielsen comes face to face with the giant fish and finds out why it is capable of wiping out smaller fish species.  And while the existence of the arapaima in Thailand is not yet considered a threat by local residents, in the Philippines, a fish this size can easily wreak havoc in natural rivers and lakes.

Doc Ferds Recio finds out more about the marine life of the Maldives.  Unlike other countries that have birds or mammals as a national icon, the Maldives’ natural animal is a fish!  The tuna, one of the most sought after in the world market, is harvested in the Maldives every day.  Doc Ferds sees just how large these fish can grow, and even meets live tuna underwater!  In the Philippines, where tuna is also an export product, the struggle to keep the species thriving remains a concern.  What can be done to protect the big fish of the Philippines, the Maldives and the rest of the world?
