BORN TO BE WILD
January 27, 2019

Monitor lizards are some of the most trafficked wildlife in the Philippines. Many endemic lizards become targets for the black market. Doc Nielsen visits Talarak Foundation in Negros Occidental where endemic species of monitor lizards are being bred in hopes of saving their species.

In Liloan, Southern Leyte, Doc Ferds meets the local “tiki” or whale shark. He and his team attempt to identify the whale sharks by comparing their “spot patterns” against a database of whale sharks that have already visited the Philippines. Doc Ferds also tries to understand more about how the whale sharks might be protected as the place grows more popular for tourists.
