‘The Big Catch' premieres this Sunday

Once called the center of the center of marine biodiversity, the Philippines is home to some of the most diverse assortment of marine life on Earth. More than seven thousand islands means that many Filipinos rely on the sea to survive. But there is a catch: experts say that the bounty of our seas is on the brink of collapse.

 

In this two-part special, Born to be Wild brings you an eye-opening documentary on the state of Philippine fisheries and how a country so rich with marine life is slowly depleting its resources.

 

Doc Ferds and Doc Nielsen trace the fish trail—from ocean, to vessel, to market. They join fishermen at sea to understand the difficulties and dangers they face just to bring precious catch to our tables.

 

 

 

It used to be called “the poor man’s fish” due to its abundance and affordability. Today, however, the galunggong is becoming more and more difficult to catch. Doc Nielsen interviews galunggong fishers who share how scarce this resource has become. He observes how the “GG” was eventually replaced by tilapia.

 

Doc Ferds for his part returns to his province, Batangas, to investigate how the endemic tawilis became endangered. Indeed, our demand for seafood and unsustainable harvesting methods have led to the shrinking of fish size and fish supply.

 

 

 

Apart from overfishing, another threat to Philippine seas is contamination. Born to be Wild investigates the presence of heavy metals in fish caught in our waters.
