BORN TO BE WILD
June 9, 2019

Giraffes are some of the most popular animals in Africa. Children learn early in school that the letter “G” stands for giraffe. But this well-known and well-loved animal is now in peril. In 2018, three subspecies of giraffe became endangered because of habitat loss, poaching, and climate change. Thirty years ago, the giraffe population in Africa stood at 170,000; today it is down to 100,000.

Doc Ferds Recio and Doc Nielsen Donato, both of whom have had close encounters with these magnificent towering creatures, take us on a journey to learn more about the lives of giraffes and what threatens their existence.

Born to be Wild takes a closer look into the plight of these animals in the wild and learns why giraffes were once transported to different parts of the world—including the Philippines.
