Biyahe ni Leon Arellano: Three Things to Try With Your Kids When in Palawan
Leon Arellano joins his dad, travel host Drew Arellano, on the latest adventure of Biyahe ni Drew in Palawan!
The 8-year-old Arellano family member showcases his wit and undeniable charm as they explore the beautiful islands of Coron and Culion.
Heritage Tour in Culion, Palawan
Located in northern Palawan, Culion is known as the “Island of No Return.” The secluded island once served as a leprosarium, where people diagnosed with leprosy were isolated from their families due to the stigma and limited medical knowledge surrounding the disease. Many had little hope of reuniting with their loved ones.
Once home to what was considered the world’s largest leper colony, Culion has since transformed into a destination rich in history and culture, making it a must-visit for travelers exploring Palawan.
In the latest episode of Biyahe ni Drew, the father-and-son duo embark on a heritage tour of some of the island’s historical landmarks. Young biyahero Leon also enjoys a meaningful and educational visit to the Culion Museum, where he learns about the island’s fascinating past through exhibits featuring leper money, remnants of hospital facilities, and archival photographs.
Pukaway Cave in Coron, Palawan
Pukaway Cave opened its doors to visitors in 2021. However, reaching its beautiful underground lake requires travelers to squeeze through a very narrow opening. Due to the steep staircase and challenging access, local guides impose height requirements to ensure visitors’ safety.
Luckily, young biyahero Leon gets the chance to join the Biyahe ni Drew squad on their cave adventure. The boys marvel at the limestone formations before taking a quick dip in the clear, brackish water.
Taste calamansi Sorbet and special Kare-Kare dish flavored with kasuy
Cashews are among Palawan’s well-known local products. Young biyahero Leon gets a firsthand look at the labor-intensive process of preparing cashew nuts before they reach pasalubong shops. Drew Arellano also takes the opportunity to try the traditional method of peeling cashews.
Under the watchful eye of his young co-host, Leon, Drew is not allowed to pull any funny tricks during the process. Leon gleefully declares, “Arellanos never cheat,” prompting Papa Drew to comply.
Beyond cashews, the biyahero duo also enjoy a refreshing dessert at a local sorbet stall. One of the shop’s unique offerings is calamansi sorbet! The generous owner even lets them sample several flavors, much to Leon’s amusement.
“You just have cashew and now you’re having that?” Leon quips.
Drew proudly replies, “This is Papa’s work for 21 years, now you know.”
Drew and Iya’s firstborn, Prime Arellano, first appeared on the travel show in 2024, when he explored the island of El Nido in Palawan.
