Episode on August 21, 2008 Thursday night after Saksi Relive the heydays of comics with Joaquin Valdes and Pia Arcangel in this Thursday’s episode of 100% Pinoy! Darna, Captain Barbel, Dyesebel and Panday are just a few of the titles that made the Filipino comic book industry thrive in the 70s and 80s. Host Joaquin Valdes talks about how komiks re-emerged and found a new niche in the cyber world. Online Pinoy komiks like “Olive Oyl – Hely Konsyus?" and “Salot" are now buzzing the cyberspace with foreigner-friendly yet very Pinoy storylines. Joaquin also meets Carlo Pagulayan, one of the many Filipino comic book artists who continue to make a mark in the international comic scene. Pagulayan’s impressive portfolio includes drawings of Elektra and The Hulk for Marvel Comics. The comeback of comics has also infiltrated the film and broadcast industry. With titles like Zsa Zsa Zaturnah, Magdusa Ka and Joaquin Bordado, who would have thought that the lowly komiks will be today’s hottest source for stories for movies and TV series? Joaquin takes a look at this phenomenon and sees how Pinoy comic books have influenced these giant industries. Guest host Pia Arcangel brings us back to our childhood as she listens to storytelling sessions in Museo Pambata, a project by the museum that teaches kids the value of reading. Who could ever forget Lola Basyang? Famed writer Severino Reyes’ stories made Lola Basyang an icon in children’s literature, and they were serialized in Liwayway magazine before becoming a radio series and eventually, a movie. Pia also talks about how Pinoy pocketbooks became a popular pastime among the masses, featuring stories that could even make the hardest heart break and fall in love.
