From Poverty to Purpose: ALS Teacher Marissa Fajardo Inspires a Generation
In the latest episode of i-LISTEN hosted by Kara David, Alternative Learning System (ALS) teacher Marissa Fajardo shares a powerful story of perseverance and purpose—proving that education can transform even the most difficult beginnings.
Growing up in poverty, Marissa worked as a laundrywoman for her neighbors just to afford transportation to school. Despite being told she would never finish her studies because her family had no money, she pressed on. On graduation day, she even borrowed a dress so she could walk across the stage and claim her diploma.

Today, she dedicates her life to helping out-of-school youth through ALS—teaching wherever she can, even under trees and in cemeteries when classrooms were unavailable. She reaches students of all ages, including a 75-year-old learner who returned to school to inspire his grandchildren.
According to World Vision, an estimated 11 million children in the Philippines are out of school, while UNESCO reports 272 million globally. For Teacher Marissa, these are not just numbers—they are lives waiting for a second chance.

Her impact is undeniable. One former ALS student who battled leukemia is now a registered nurse—proof that education, when given a chance, can change a destiny.
Recognized at the Most Outstanding Kapampangan Awards of 2025, Marissa Fajardo stands as a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and education.
Her message is simple: Poverty is not a barrier. Education is hope—and it is never too late to learn.
