Atom Araullo meets the 'King of the Ocean'

“King of the Ocean”. Known as the ocean’s top predator, the sharks are the undisputed ruler of the seas. With over two hundred species, the Philippines is considered as having one of the largest population of sharks in the world, putting the Philippines as fourth in the list of Global Shark Biodiversity in the world and second in Southeast Asia.

Some sustain a living and other places rake in a fortune by becoming popular tourist destinations because of these sea creatures. However, various threats beset them.

 

This Ocean’s Month, award-winning documentarist Atom Araullo travels to different parts of the country to take a close look at how the sharks industry has been shaping and thriving.

In Donsol, Sorsogon where the largest population of butanding or whale sharks was recorded, tourists are allowed to swim at the natural habitat of the whale sharks, the world’s biggest fish.

In Oslob, Cebu, another popular whale shark interaction site, Atom examines the situation and finds answers on why the Oslob venture has been criticized by various groups as disrupting the living patterns of whale sharks.

In Monad Shoal and Gato Island in Malapascua in Cebu, Atom also dives underwater in the only place in the world where thresher sharks can be viewed with certainty.

Atom continues the journey in Mercedes, Camarines Norte where sharks trade is still prevalent. As some keep their ability to bring food to the family, they hunt, kill and sell sharks which they claim are not considered as protected and endangered.

Is the shark tourism industry a form of conservation or exploitation?

How do we find balance on the need of others for sustenance and the need to protect the sharks?

This May 27, join Atom Araullo as he embarks on a meaningful journey and tackles the benefits and challenges and presents the present and future of the “King of the Ocean”.

FILIPINO VERSION

“Hari ng Karagatan”, ang mga pating o sharks na itinuturing na pinakamabangis sa dagat. Tinatayang nasa mahigit dalawang daan ang uri ng  mga pating sa Pilipinas, isa sa pinakamalaking bilang sa buong mundo. Kaya naman pang-apat ang Pilipinas sa listahan ng Global Shark Biodiversity sa mundo at pangalawa naman sa Southeast Asia.

Dito sa atin, dinarayo para masilayanan ang mga pating. Habang sa ibang lugar naman, sila’y hinuhuli at pinagkakakitaan.

Sa paggunita ng Ocean’s Month ngayong Mayo, samahan si Atom Araullo sa isang natatangi at makabuluhang paglalakbay upang alamin ang kalagayan ng mga tinaguriang hari ng karagatan.

Sa Donsol, Sorsogon, ang pinakauna at kilalang whale shark interaction site, naitala ang pinakamaraming bilang ng whale shark o butanding sa Pilipinas. Dito, pinapayagan ang mga turista na lumangoy kasama ang mga butanding sa kanilang natural habitat.

Pinasyalan din ni Atom ang bayan ng Oslob sa Cebu, isa rin sa dinarayong whale shark interaction site. Pero may ilang bumabatikos sa paraan ng turismo sa Oslob dahil pinapakain ng mga mangingisda ang mga butanding para lumapit sa mga turista.

Sinisid din ni Atom ang Monad Shoal at Gato Island sa Malapascua sa Cebu. Sa buong mundo, dito lang sa lugar na ito tiyak na makakakita at makakasalamuha ang mga thresher shark.

Tinungo rin ni Atom ang bayan ng Mercedes sa Camarines Norte kung saan lantaran ang bentahan ng mga pating. Pero giit ng mga residente doon, hindi kabilang sa mga ipinagbabawal ang mga hinuhuli nila sa karagatan.

Nakabubuti o nakasasama nga ba sa mga pating ang pag-usbong ng turismo?

Paano mababalanse ang kabuhayan ng mga umaasa sa mga pating at ang pangangailangan na sila’y  mapangalagaan?

Ngayong Mayo, sisisirin at dadayuhin ni Atom Araullo ang iba’t-ibang lugar sa bansa para malalimang alamin at tuklasin ang mga bantang kinakaharap ng mga hari ng karagatan.
