Ito ay isang pangkaraniwang storya ng mga “Doctors to the Barrio” kung tawagin.

Ngunit para kay Dr. Lionel Peters, doktor na may dugong Samoan at Filipino na mula sa Cavite, ang paglilingkod sa isa sa mga pinaka-malayong isla sa Palawan ay masasabing payapa at simple dahil sa magagandang tanawin at likas na yaman na nakapalibot sa nasabing lugar.

Pero ang lahat ng ito ay kabaliktaran.

Pangkaraniwan na kay Dok ang araw-araw na paglibot sa buong isla upang puntahan ang kanyang mga pasyente sa bahay na walang kakayahang pumunta sa health center.

Gamit ni Dok ang isang motor na ipinagkaloob ng Department of Health at tinawag na “motorcycle ambulance” upang magsilbing ambulansya ng munisipalidad ng Agutaya na kabilang sa Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas o GIDA.

Tuberculosis, cancer, cerebral palsy ay ilan lamang sa mga kondisyon ng mga pasyente ni dok sa isla.

Ngunit ang katotohanan, hindi sapat ang “motorcycle ambulance” para sa pangangailangan ng mga residente ng Agutaya.

Bukod sa mainland ng isla, meron pang mga “island barangays” na nangangailangan din ng ospital. Dahil ang pinakamalapit na ospital sa kanila ay halos tatlong oras ang layo sakay ng bangka, at depende pa ito sa lagay ng panahon dahil kung minsan ay napakalaki at napakalakas ng alon.

Kung si dok ang tatanungin, gusto pa niyang manatili dahil alam niya ang pangangailangan sa kalusugan ng mga residente, ngunit ang kanyang kontrata bilang doktor sa isla ay matatapos na sa loob ng ilang buwan.

Mabibigyang solusyon kaya ang kagustuhan ng munisipalidad na magkaroon ng isang ospital sa hinaharap?

It is a typical “doctor to the barrio” narrative.

But for Dr. Lionel Peters, half Samoan-half Filipino doctor who originated from Cavite, servicing the residents of a very remote island off the northern tip of Palawan may seem relaxed as the scenic beaches and laidback lifestyle surround the whole island barangays.

But it is actually the complete opposite.

His daily rounds consist of going house to house to perform checkups on patients who are incapable of travelling.

Medical conditions such as tuberculosis, cerebral palsy, cancer, are some of the ailments that his patients suffer from.

Dr. Peters uses a 2 wheeled vehicle provided by the DOH. Dubbed as the “motorcycle ambulance,” this is an experimental project of the department since 2017 that is used to reach geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

But the motorcycle ambulance is only one of the myriad needs the residents require.

The island barangays badly need a hospital. The nearest is a minimum of 3 hours away which can be reached by having to go through rough waves using boats that are hardly available.

Dr. Peters wants to ease the medical predicament of his patients but his term as a volunteer doctor is ending in a few months.
