GAME REVIEW: Spider-Man Unlimited swings into mobile devices with style

It isn’t everyday that you can sit in front of a personal computer or video game console to play and get your gaming fix on, but that hasn’t stopped Paris-based video game developer from developing quality titles for mobile devices that have proven handy for those who want to pass the time. Their latest offering once again dips into the well of the expansive Marvel Universe, and it’s a title that once again features everyone’s favorite webhead wallcrawler, The Amazing Spider-Man. Unlike past Spidey games however, this one not only focuses on the original, but a dozen other alternate realities and Spider-Men, and serves up a fun tap and switch game that is aptly named “Spider-Man: Unlimited.”

Released this September and featuring over 23 different Spider-Men to choose from, Spider-Man Unlimited sees our friendly neighborhood hero and his Spider-Verse incarnations dueling with the formidable members of the Sinister Six, as they race to save New York City from their evil plan to open a dimensional rift. Told through a series of episodes, the player guides Spider-Man by running, jumping, sliding, and swinging to fight an army of monsters, robots, and villains to save the city. The heroes also have to deal with the Sinister Six’s alternate universe counterparts, so there’s plenty of evil to fight against before they squash NYC and Peter Parker’s alter ego like a bug for good.

Dubbed “a web-runner inspired by over 50 years of Spider-Man comics” by Marvel , Spider-Man Unlimited is pretty much a cross between the all-popular Temple Run games and Spidey’s world. Through a simple and easy to learn tutorial system, players can guide Spider-Man as he avoids and goes past all the obstacles and enemies he faces in order to reach the final boss and goal at the end of each stage. The game’s story is also very comic book in nature, drawing inspiration from the current season of the “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors” cartoon series and the upcoming major comic book event that is “Spider-Verse”, where every Spider-Man ever meets and partners up with the original red-and-blue to put a stop to evil threats coming their way. In the game, Spidey even interacts and deal with the likes of Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D., showing that the rest of the Marvel Universe is just as concerned about what the wallcrawler has to deal with.

Though the game requires some periodic downloads for the new updates and episodes, Spider-Man Unlimited is worth the time and price of admission. In fact, there is no charge at all… The game is absolutely free for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android, and Windows Phone, so there’s a great way to pass the time and be in the shoes of Marvel’s finest and the world’s greatest superhero! Just in time for the celebration of the upcoming Spider-Verse event in comics and reliving the highlights of his stellar career, go spin a web and download Spider-Man Unlimited! — TJD, GMA News
