The integration of science and technology into government policy-making is crucial to improve environmental protection and security, said Malaysian prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak during a forum of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies’ Chief Science Advisors in Kuala Lumpur.

During the forum, Najib also emphasized the need for greater scientific cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region to address cross-border threats and support sustainable and inclusive development.

“Science diplomacy has never been more important,” said Najib. “Many of the defining challenges of the 21st century—most notably climate change, food and water security, energy security, poverty alleviation and health—have scientific dimensions of increasing complexity.”

The forum’s theme was, “Building Foundations for Scientific Advice Towards Inclusive Economies and a Better World.” The forum promotes the use of scientific evidence when making policy decisions related to development in APEC economies.

“Science and technology has played and will continue to play a prominent role in future climate change-related disaster risk reduction,” Najib added. “Assessments of hazards—their magnitude, timelines and estimated costs—and the technologies or techniques required to prevent or mitigate impacts, will be critical to informed decision-making.” — Bea Montenegro/TJD, GMA News
