Magnitude 5.6 quake strikes off Itbayat, Batanes

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit off the coast of Itbayat in Batanes late Thursday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

The agency earlier reported that a magnitude 5.3 quake hit Batanes.

The quake occurred at 9:48 p.m. and is tectonic in origin and with a depth of 15 kilometers.

The earthquake was also felt in other areas, namely:

• Intensity III - Itbayat, Batanes
• Intensity II - Basco and Mahatao, Batanes
• Intensity I - Ivana, Batanes

The agency also reported that no damage can be expected but aftershocks may occur. -- BAP, GMA Integrated News
