Barn swallows swarm Panabo City in Davao del Norte

A swarm of small, black birds recently turned the twilight skies over Panabo City, Davao del Norte, into a curious sight.

According to Kuya Kim’s report on “24 Oras,” Thursday, the birds, which are identified as barn swallows, were caught on video by resident Sharpey Banuno.

“Ang dami pong ibon sa wire. Sobrang ingay po ng paligid,” Sharpey said. “During that time po makulimlim po ‘yung panahon. Parang may bagyo na po dadarating kasi nakikita ko sa mga TV, ‘pag may mga ibon na gano’n, may paparating na po na bagyo.”

Per Kuya Kim, barn swallows are migratory birds that originate from China, Japan, and Korea.

“Sila po ay pumupunta po dito sa Pilipinas kapag lumalamig na po ‘yung klima doon sa mga norte. Kumakain sila ng mga insekto, at dito po sa Pilipinas, year-round naman pong madami ‘yung mga insekto kaya meron po silang makakain dito sa bansa natin,” said Jelaine Gan, a biologist from the University of the Philippines Diliman.

She assured that the birds do not carry any danger to people and instead play a beneficial role in the environment.

“Wala naman po silang masamang dinadala sa ating mga tao dahil hindi naman po sila nananakit ng mga tao,” Gan said. “Itong mga ibon na 'to ay 'yung ating natural na mga pest control at tinutulungan rin po 'yung mga farmers natin na mawala po 'yung mga peste.”

But while environmentally helpful, the sheer volume of barn swallows can sometimes lead to problems.

“Kapag marami po silang nagsama-sama at napunta po sila sa mga urban areas tulad na lang po ng mga lungsod natin ay minsan po nagkakaroon ng perwiso doon sa mga taong nakatira,” she said.

If there is a risk of a short circuit or fire involving the electrical wires where the birds have perched, residents must immediately inform the electric company or the relevant authorities.
