PHL to compete in int'l Sudoku contests

The Philippines will be represented in four international Sudoku competitions this year, the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG) said Saturday.

MTG president Dr. Simon Chua said the winners in the 6th Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge held last January will be fielded in the world contests.

Chua said the four contests include:

  • the 2012 World Sudoku Championship in Croatia
  • 2012 Beijing International Sudoku Tournament in China in May
  • BRAND’s Sudoku Challenge 2012 Asia Pacific Open in Singapore
  • 6th BRAND’s Sudoku Thailand International Open 2012-Princess Somsawali Cup

The Philippines had produced winners in world Sudoku contests, including Sarah Jane Cua, who was champion in the BRAND’S Asia-Pacific Sudoku Challenge in 2008 and 2010 in Singapore.

Cua topped the 18-years-old-and-below bracket at the 2011 Beijing International Sudoku Tournament.

John Robert Valcos also emerged champion, and Cua as first runner-up, in the 3rd BRAND'S SUDOKU Thailand International Open 2009 Princess Somsawali Cup in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, the MTG and SM Supermalls signed a new agreement for the 7th Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge (PSSC) this year.

The 7th PSSC will start with simultaneous regional contests on Oct. 14 in various SM Supermalls all over the country.

Regional winners will compete in the national finals on Jan. 27, 2013 at the SM City North EDSA Annex.

“We’re very happy with the partnership with MTG,” said Millie Dizon, SM Supermalls vice president for Marketing and Communications.

For his part, Chua thanked SM Supermalls for its continued support to the contest.

“We are very honored to be in partnership again with SM Supermalls in the holding of the Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge,” he said. — TJD, GMA News
