If the weather cooperates, stargazers can look forward to a meteor shower starting on Easter Monday, state astronomers said.

PAGASA acting administrator Vicente Malano said the Lyrids meteor shower may peak from April 21 to before dawn of April 22.

"The shower typically generates a dozen meteors per hour under optimal conditions with a brief maximum that lasts for less than a day. The shower’s peak this year will be in progress on April 21 to predawn of April 22," Malano said.

He added the Lyrids meteor shower had been observed for more than 2,600 years, with Chinese records showing "stars fell like rain" during the meteor shower in 687 B.C.

But the Lyrids had been "generally" weak in recent times, Malano noted.

Still, he said Lyrids are "bright and fast meteors." — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
