Archaeologists from the University of the Philippines are slowly unearthing a "horno" or Spanish kiln from a town in Misamis Oriental province in Mindanao.
The kiln is the only one left in the Northern Mindanao area, according to the local government unit of Alubijid in Misamis Oriental.
In a post on its Facebook page last April 28, the LGU said a team from UP Diliman is slowly exposing the find in Barangay Poblacion.
Photos posted on CDODev.com also indicated the archaeological and heritage project started April 23 and will last until May 14.
Meanwhile, a separate CDODev.com article cited a study by UP Professor Lee Neri showing the kiln is believed to be built by a Jesuit brother named Juan Costa during the Spanish period.
"Interestingly, the bricks from the said kiln may have been used to build the Baclayon Church, considered the oldest in the country," it said.
CDODev.com noted the work is a "very delicate" process that "requires expertise in archaeology."
But it added that once the study is completed, "this could be a major tourist or heritage spot in the province." — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
