Square-shaped watermelons a hit at Pangasinan's Pakwan Festival

Festival goers went gaga for the square watermelons of agricultural firm Seedcompany during the agri-trade fair of the Pakwan Festival, an ongoing event in Bani town in Pangasinan that started on Monday.

Seedcompany representative John Marquez told GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas" Tuesday that Bani's land and climate were ideal for the propagation of these unusual fruit shapes.

"Yung procedure at tsaka management almost the same, but meron siyang susundan na management- may technique siya," Marquez said of growing these shapes.

Planted regularly, these watermelons were put into molds one month after their planting to grow into new geometrical shapes.

Bani Mayor Gwen Yamamoto Palafox said demo farms will be set-up in the municipality for the next harvest season to promote the care and planting of these produce.

The care put into making square watermelons marked up their price P10 higher than regular fruits, but the four to five kilo beauties were predicted to attract tourists looking for something unique to take home.

Other fruits, vegetables, and agricultural products were on display during the said fair to promote the various barangays of Bani.

Unique fruit molds are a hit with amateur and professional agriculturists alike.

The Daily Mail in 2012 reported on the little Buddha-shaped pears of Hao Xianzhang of China, who labored for six years to create the £5 pears.
