Get ready to drop, cover, and hold during the #MMShakeDrill
By BEA MONTENEGRO, GMA News
When an earthquake hits, it’s important to know what to do to stay safe. Practice the Drop, Cover, Hold procedure to protect yourself during a quake:
Drop down to the floor to avoid losing your balance and falling over.
Take Cover under the nearest piece of sturdy furniture. This protects you from glass from broken windows and falling objects.
Hold onto the furniture and stay put until the ground stops shaking and it’s safe to stand up.

Mav Gonzales demonstrated the procedure in a report on State of the Nation With Jessica Soho. You can participate in the earthquake drill by practicing the drop, cover, and hold procedure in your own home.
According to PHIVOLCS’ Seismology Department OIC, Ishmael Narag, this is unlike a fire drill where you need to leave the building immediately. During an earthquake, you need to stay put in a safe place until the earthquake is over.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will be conducting a metro-wide earthquake drill on 30 July in preparation for a possible magnitude 7.2 earthquake that could be generated by the West Valley Fault. Additional information about the drills can be found at the website www.bepreparedmetromanila.com which also includes a page where you can volunteer to be part of the rescue corps, which will mobilize and help the MMDA in the event an earthquake hits the country.
