Nobel Laureate Richard Heck "fought for his life" but didn't receive treatment in time, according to his personal nurse.

Jane Rose Pido told GMA News' Raffy Tima that Heck had been suffering from extreme vomiting but was supposedly turned away from a private hospital because he could not afford treatment. He was eventually admitted to a public hospital, but passed away shortly afterward.

"Ang sakit lang na lumalaban yung tao tapos mawawala lang kasi walang pera," said a tearful Pido.

Heck was said to have been suffering from lingering diseases for years, straining his finances. He had also been suffering from severe depression since his wife passed away in 2012.

Heck won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Japanese Ei-ichi Negishi and Akira Suzuki for discovering new ways to bind carbon atoms—a process that has found its way into diverse fields including cancer research and computer screen technology. — TJ Dimacali, GMA News
