Teen from Bicol invents eco-friendly air conditioner with low energy consumption

The bills keep coming and as rising prices of basic services like electricity bring gloom to households, one teen proves yet again that there's hope to be found in science. 

Philippine Science High School (Bicol Campus) alumna Maria Yzabell Angel Palma was tagged as a 19-year-old "whiz" in an Unang Balita report Wednesday and that's not an exaggeration.

Yzabell developed the AirDisc Air Conditioning Technology, which is an eco-friendly air-conditioning system that does away with chemical refrigerants and also consumes less energy. 

The Philippine Information Agency quoted Yzabell as saying in a press conference held in Quezon City earlier in August that the unit she developed consumes 150 watts only. 

The PIA report goes on to explain: 

Existing air conditioning systems use piston or rotary compressors with high pressure and low volume with harmful hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) as medium for cooling.

While, Palma's technology uses "the air we breathe" as the cooling medium, which means it is safe to the consumers and to the environment.

Unang Balita supplied that Yzabell was inspired by her school project on the "AirWave Oven." She noticed that there's potential in the cool air discharged in one part of the unit.

Yzabelle has been recognized by the International Federation of Inventors' Association (IFIA) after receiving the following awards: Leading Innovator Award from International Intellectual Property Network Forum (Malaysia); International Leadership Award from Eurobusiness, Haller (Poland); International Leadership Award from China Association of Invention (China); Leadership Excellence Award from MyRis (Malaysia); Leading Student Award from National Research Council of Thailand; Leading Innovator Award from Indonesian Innovation and Invention Promotion Association (Indonesia); International Leadership Award from World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIIPA) (Taiwan); Best Invention Award from WIIPA (Taiwan); Special Citation for the Best Invention from MyRIS (Malaysia); and International Best Young Inventor from Romanian Inventors Forum (Romania).
