PHIVOLCS raises Alert Level 1 over Taal Volcano

Phivolcs has raised Alert Level 1 over the Taal Volcano in Batangas on Monday after it recorded 87 volcanic earthquakes within a 24-hour observation period.

According to the agency’s 8 a.m. Taal Volcano Bulletin, a volcanic earthquake at 7:54 a.m. on Sunday was felt at Intensity I at the northern and southern sectors of the Volcano Island, Tibag and Alas-an.

Alert Level I means a hazardous eruption is not imminent but the main crater is strictly off limits to the public in case of sudden steam explosions.

The agency reminded the public that permanent settlement on the Volcano Island was not allowed because the area was a permanent danger zone.

Taal Volcano’s last major eruption took place on October 3, 1977. —NB, GMA News
