A total of 254 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in Taal Volcano over the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Thursday.

In its 8 a.m. bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the volcanic earthquakes included 220 episodes of volcanic tremor with durations of one to 27 minutes; 33 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes; and one volcanic-tectonic earthquake.

PHIVOLCS said activity at the volcano's main crater included weak emission of steam-laden plumes from fumarolic vents that rose five meters. Sulfur dioxide emission averaged 509 tonnes on Wednesday, March 31.

At present, Alert Level 2 (increased unrest) is maintained over Taal Volcano.

PHIVOLCS said the volcano's unrest is elevating and is being constantly evaluated by concerned agencies.

The agency warned the public that Alert Level 2 means that sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas could occur.

It said entry in the Taal Volcano Island, Taal’s Permanent Danger Zone, especially near the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, is prohibited.

Local government units are also advised to constantly monitor the situation in the area, PHIVOLCS said.  —Anna Felicia Bajo/KBK, GMA News
