12 volcanic tremors recorded in Taal Volcano, Alert Level 2 remains
Twelve volcanic tremor events were observed in Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours, and Alert Level 2 remains in effect, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said on Saturday.
The volcanic tremor events lasted from two to five minutes, including a low-level background tremor which has persisted since July 7, the PHIVOLCS said.
On Friday, the main crater exhibited upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in its lake.
Plumes reaching as high as 3,000 meters were emitted and drifted east-southeast and west-southwest.
PHIVOLCS said the 23,576 tonnes of sulfur dioxide emitted on Friday was "anomalously high.
Vog was also observed over Taal Volcano and its vicinity, it said.
Taal Volcano Island meanwhile continues to inflate since August 2021, while the Taal region is continuing its slow extension which began in 2020.
Alert Level 2 means the volcano is showing increased unrest.
PHIVOLCS reminded the public that under Alert Level 2, there may be sudden steam- or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas. These may threaten Taal Volcano Island and nearby areas.
The agency reminded the public that Taal Volcano Island is off limits as it is a permanent danger zone.
It also recommended prohibiting occupancy and boating on Taal Lake.
Pilots were also advised not to fly close to Taal Volcano as airborne ash and ballistic fragments from sudden explosions and wind-remobilized ash may be hazardous to aircraft. —KG, GMA News
