Sinkholes are large depressions found on the ground. These holes form when the soil is drenched in water, especially when it’s made of limestone.

As reported on #KuyaKimAnoNa on “24 Oras” Friday, an erosion was likely to occur if there were typhoons, floods, or earthquakes.

A sinkhole was said to have caused four houses to collapse in Mawab, Davao de Oro, on Monday.

However, Capter John Tubo, senior chief geologist at Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Region XI, said the eroded surface of a sinkhole was usually around a center, while landslides tended to be inclined toward a certain direction.

According to Rheycalyn Lugtu, Mines and Geosciences Bureau geologist, what happened in Mawab was likely a slump failure, which was a type of landslide, or soil piping, because the ground was soft and there’s a creek nearby. – RC, GMA News
