Can goldfish learn how to drive?
Can fish learn how to drive? Probably not with a car, but if you attach wheels to an aquarium, then yes they can.
A study conducted by researchers at Ben-Gurion University in Israel demonstrated this when they measured the navigation skills of goldfish.
The fish learned how to drive a fish-operated vehicle or FOV, a small aquarium with wheels which moves in the same direction the fish swims. It contains a remote sensor which tracks the location of the fish in the tank.
"Surprisingly, it doesn't take the fish a long time to learn how to drive the vehicle," said Shachar Givon, one of the researchers.
"They're very confused at first. They don't know what's going on but they're very quick to realize that there is a correlation between their movement and the movement of the machine that they're in."
According to Ronen Segev, a neuroscientist, some of the fish showed excellent driving skills were others were less proficient, just like human drivers.
"In a sense, we humans think of ourselves as very special and we think, many people think about fish as primitive in sense of evolution but this is not correct," he said. "There are other very important and very smart creatures."
