Pinoy student's experiment proposal to be performed in International Space Station
An experiment proposal from a Filipino student is going to be performed at the International Space Station!
According to a press release from the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA), the experiment was submitted by William Kevin Abran from the University of the Philippines Los Banos.
His proposal, "Rotation of Dumbbell-shaped Objects in Space," is among the 24 international finalists for the Asian Try Zero-G (ATZG) 2022, an international cooperation experiment launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
Abran's entry is one of the six experiments selected to be conducted at the ISS by astronaut Koichi Wakata beginning in autumn.
The experiment aims to observe the long-term stability of the rotations of dumbbell-shaped objects, which have two distinct principal moments of inertia, in microgravity.
A total of 201 submissions from 480 students and researchers across eight regions. The proposals were assessed based on scientific significance, novelty, safety, resource requirement, and feasibility.
In the Philippines, PhilSA held the screening from May 9 to May 29 and submitted five entries, including Abran's, to JAXA for final evaluation.
