Do fish in the ocean have a sense of direction? How are they able to return to their habitats?
According to Kuya Kim on “24 Oras” Tuesday, all fishes are able to navigate. Meaning, they can leave and return to where they came from.
A study by US marine biologists Peter Klimley and Donald Nelson attached transmitters to a shark and a tuna and found they were able to return to their habitats despite being away for miles.
Meanwhile, eight out of 10 mottled triplefins returned four to six days after they were released, in a study by New Zealand marine biologist Sue Thompson.
Kuya Kim said that the homing instinct of fish is due to their internal compass and olfaction. They can also rely on visual landmarks.
In Cebu, meanwhile, whale sharks or butanding—the world's largest fish—were spotted in the waters off Barangay Marigondon in Lapu-Lapu City, almost 130 kilometers from where they are usually found, in the municipality of Oslob's waters.
According to Allan Poquita, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 7 regional director, this is fine since the whale sharks are just looking for food.
Marigondon’s barangay captain, Emi Bonghanoy, added that they are ensuring the animals’ safety. — Franchesca Viernes/BM, GMA News
