Taal Volcano had 28 volcanic tremors, emitted plumes in past 24 hours —PHIVOLCS

Taal Volcano in Batangas continued to show signs of unrest, with volcanic tremors and plumes observed in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Wednesday.

Twenty-eight volcanic tremors lasting from four to 12 minutes were recorded, along with low-level background tremor, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin.

Voluminous plumes rising up to 2,800 meters tall were also seen at the volcano, and these drifted north and northeast.

PHIVOLCS said Taal Volcano emitted 4,312 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Tuesday.

The agency said Alert Level 1 (low-level unrest) remains in effect in Taal Volcano.

It added that Taal Volcano Island is a permanent danger zone and should be off limits, especially its main crater and Daang Kastila fissures.

PHIVOLCS also said occupancy and boating on Taal Lake is prohibited.

Flying aircraft near the volcano is also hazardous, it added.

PHIVOLCS said steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas may occur. —KG, GMA News
