313 volcanic earthquakes recorded in Bulusan Volcano in past 24 hours - PHIVOLCS

Over 300 volcanic earthquakes were monitored at the Bulusan Volcano in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Thursday.

In its latest bulletin, PHIVOLCS said 313 volcanic earthquakes were recorded as of 5 a.m. on Thursday. It was also emitting 279 tonnes of sulfur dioxide per day when it was last measured on September 29.

PHIVOLCS further said its plume was obscured while its edifice was inflated.

Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon was placed under Alert Level 1 on Wednesday after it showed signs of "low-level unrest."

With the alert status, the agency maintained that entry into the volcano’s four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited and vigilance in the two-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) in the southeast sector must be exercised “due to the increased possibilities of sudden and hazardous phreatic eruptions.”

Civil aviation authorities must also inform pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft. — VBL, GMA News
