Magnitude 5 quake recorded offshore Cortes, Surigao del Sur

A magnitude 5 earthquake was recorded offshore Cortes, Surigao del Sur on Sunday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The earthquake, which was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 11 kilometers, occurred at 12:43 p.m.

Its epicenter was traced to 35 kilometers northeast of Cortes.

The quake was measured at:

• Intensity II - Tandag, Surigao del Sur
• Intensity I - Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte

While there is no damage expected, PHIVOLCS said it expects aftershocks from the quake.

PHIVOLCS initially reported the quake to be at magnitude 5.2, then revised it to magnitude 5.0. —Mel Matthew Doctor/KG, GMA News
