Magnitude 5.0 earthquake rocks Calaca, Batangas


A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was recorded in Calaca, Batangas and was felt in several areas in Metro Manila on Friday morning.

Interviewed on Dobol B TV, Dr. Teresito Bacolcol, director of  Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), said the tectonic earthquake had a depth of 14 kilometers.

In its report, PHIVOLCS said the earthquake, which happened at 8:24 a.m., was located at 13.89°N, 120.78°E - 005 km S 39° W of Calaca.

The reported intensities from the quake were:

  • Intensity V - Batangas City, and Lemery, BATANGAS
  • Intensity IV - CITY OF MUNTINLUPA; Sta. Teresita and Lemery, BATANGAS
  • Intensity III - City of Tagaytay, CAVITE; Talisay, San Jose, City of Lipa, Padre Garcia, and Laurel, BATANGAS
  • Intensity II - City of General Trias, CAVITE; Pateros, METRO MANILA; QUEZON CITY; CITY OF VALENZUELA; CITY OF PASAY; Obando, and City of Meycauayan, BULACAN; Santa Cruz, and San Pablo, LAGUNA
  • Intensity I - CITY OF PASIG; CITY OF CALOOCAN

Instrumental Intensities were felt in the following areas:

  • Intensity V - Lemery, BATANGAS
  • Intensity IV - Ibajay, AKLAN; Cuenca, Bauan, Sta. Teresita, San Luis, BATANGAS; Tagaytay City, CAVITE; Muntinlupa City, METRO MANILA

PHIVOLCS said aftershocks and damage should be expected.

In Muntinlupa City in Metro Manila, Mayor Ruffy Biazon ordered the suspension of classes in all levels in public schools to give way for the inspection of school buildings.

Suspension of classes in private schools in the city, meanwhile, is left to the discretion of the school's management, Biazon said. KBK, GMA Integrated News
