MSU-GenSan researchers develop device that can help persons with visual impairment cross roads

Researchers from the Mindanao State University - General Santos have developed a device that can help persons with visual impairment cross roads.

According to Martin Javier’s report on “24 Oras”  Monday, the device, which is called Safe Step, is a smart assistance system that uses motion detection and audio-based guidance.

“We created a non-invasive device that can be installed on any traffic light or traffic light pedestrian. It is powered by AI video analyzation,” Safe Step developer Jade Lienar Galaura said.

The device can be installed on any traffic light to alert those with visual impairment when it’s safe to cross.

“Magbibigay ng cue for the visually impaired. Mag-reach siya ng status ng traffic light tapos i-convert niya into audible sounds,” Safe Step mentor Cristina Dadula said.

The device consists of a webcam, speakers, and a processing unit. The webcam is pointed at the traffic light, and once it detects the green signal, the speaker signals that it's safe for pedestrians to cross the street.

Despite its functionality, Dadula said that Safe Step has a lot to improve.

“I-improve pa ang accuracy, ‘yung speed. Kasi ‘yung output niya is time to walk. As much as possible, zero delay,” she said.
