Taal Volcano erupts briefly; Alert Level 1 still up

Taal Volcano eruption Alert Level 1

Taal Volcano erupted briefly early Wednesday, September 30, but state volcanologists said Alert Level 1 remained in effect.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the eruption started shortly before 2 a.m. and ended at 2:15 a.m.

State volcanologists said they are still gathering more details about the eruption.

In its latest 24-hour monitoring report, PHIVOLCS recorded two volcanic earthquakes. The main crater lake temperature reached 68.7°C, while sulfur dioxide emissions were measured at 563 tons per day as of September 27. A weak plume rose 500 meters and drifted southwest.

Slight swelling was also detected at Taal Volcano Island.

Authorities reminded the public that sudden steam-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, thin ashfall, and emission of toxic gases may still occur.

Entry into Taal Volcano Island, especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures, as well as flying aircraft close to the volcano’s summit, remain strictly prohibited. –GMA Regional TV
